Since I first started talking to composers about contributing music for U-GRUVE AR, it became very apparent that while the basic concepts were clear, the overall approach to writing indeterminate, site-specific music was not. Additionally, since the original goal was, and still is, to involve many composers from many different backgrounds, a process for preparing and submitting the various necessary assets was also warranted.
Hence, we’ve just released the document that addresses these issues. “Getting Started With U-GRUVE AR and Aleatoric, Location-driven Music Systems: A Guide for Composers” is now available to anyone interested in creating music with the U-GRUVE AR system. We’ve kept it intentionally high-level so that composers could quickly find the most-needed information and then get down to the business of composing. Key sections include:
03 Historical Precedent
04 What You’ll Be Delivering
05 The Process
06 System Features / Capabilities
07 System Limitations
08 Best Practices
As you can see, the Guide is not just a technical manual, but an aid to properly frame the composer’s overall approach and mindset, with the intent of establishing a unified sense of purpose across the entire offering. Here’s an excerpt from the “Concept” section:
“And while U-GRUVE AR was originally conceived as a music visualization system / performance tool, the AR edition has forced us to examine some very significant aesthetic and cognitive questions regarding the concept of “place”, how it contributes to one’s overall state of being, and how music can impact the quality of that state, both in our sense of presence within a place, and that place’s presence wtihin our memories.
“It is our hope, then, that the music we produce and offer our listeners will deepen their experience and connection to locations that matter to them, in much the same way that a great film score would, by adding qualitative emphasis in just the right places at just the right times, seamlessly blending the real with the recorded.”
The Guide is only available to members of Studio-M, Memetic Arts’ content development group, which includes all u-gruve composers. If you are interested in composing music for U-GRUVE AR, please apply for a free Studio-M membership and tell us about yourself. Once you are accepted, we will send you a link to the guide.
